(Atlantic) New Atlantic Mayor and former City Councilperson Grace Garrett will conduct her first regular City Council meeting this evening in the City Council Chambers. Garrett replaces longtime Mayor Dave Jones, who didn’t seek re-election.
One of the first business items is to appoint Elaine Otte to fill the vacant at-large City Council seat.
City councils have several options to fill vacancies. One option is to appoint an individual to the position. The notice to select must be published not less than four and not more than 20-days before the Council considers the appointment by the Iowa Code. A person appointed to fill the vacancy serves until the next city election.
The public has the right to petition for a special election within fourteen days after the appointment is made or the notice is published, whichever is later, and contains enough signatures of eligible electors of the city.
The City Council meeting starts at 5:30 p.m.
