(Red Oak) The Red Oak City Council on Monday approved several measures addressing levee safety, parking restrictions and drainage improvements.
The Council passed the first reading of an ordinance prohibiting the operation or parking of vehicles on the levee.
The proposed ordinance comes after an April incident in which four people drove vehicles recklessly on the levee during rainy, muddy conditions, causing damage. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers conducted two inspections following the incident and recommended the city adopt clear rules prohibiting unauthorized vehicle traffic on the levee.

The Council also approved the first reading of an ordinance that would establish no parking on the south side of East Coolbaugh Street from N Eighth Street to Highland Avenue (Photo Above), matching the restriction originally intended and already implemented in the area. The Council has discussed the issue at previous meetings.
And, the Red Oak City Council approved moving forward with a $30,000 project to address drainage problems between the Fire Station and Emergency Management building. The work would include a properly pitched sidewalk and connecting Fire Department downspouts to the storm sewer system. Montgomery County Emergency Management would pay half the storm water improvement costs, up to $15,000, with the City paying the remainder. The City also plans to inspect the sanitary sewer while the area is open and make repairs if needed. Those costs would be paid entirely by the City.
