(Guthrie Center) Three ACGC players scored in double figures as the Chargers powered past Audubon, 57-32, in a Class 1A Substate basketball game Thursday night.
Jathan South led the way with 19 points, while Noah Kading and Payton Policky each added 10. Mason Wahl contributed six points, and Tommy Skram chipped in three.
Audubon was led by Brody Schultes with eight points, followed by Mason Steckler with six. Austin Christensen added five, Carson Wessel scored four, and Oliver Deist had three. Aaron Olsen, Aiden Kjergaard, and Sullivan McLain each finished with two.
ACGC jumped out to an early 8-2 lead, but the Wheelers battled back to cut the deficit to 10-8. The Chargers responded with four quick points to take a 14-8 advantage at the end of the first quarter. They carried that momentum into the second, opening with a 6-0 run and heading into halftime up 29-15. South and Kading fueled the offense, scoring 10 and eight first-half points, respectively.
The Chargers put the game out of reach in the third quarter, erupting for an 11-0 run. Crawford and Policky drained three-pointers to help push the lead to 46-24 entering the final frame. ACGC continued to dominate down the stretch, closing out the win at 57-32. ACGC Head Coach Lance Kading was impressed with Audubon.
Coach Kading says this is a fun group to coach. He says they’ve been at it for four years, with five senior leaders ,which does not happen that often in this program.
Jathan South, one of the seniors, says the team did a great job of playing with physicality and speed.
South has accumulated 439 points this season, averaging 19 points per game. He credits the success to hard work.
With the victory, ACGC improves to 21-2 and advances to face IKM-Manning on Tuesday. Audubon finishes the season with an 11-12 record.
