(Treynor, IA) The Treynor state-qualifier meet started at 4 p.m. on Thursday as AHSTW and Audubon Girls track made their final adjustments before starting the races. The wait didn’t take long for the Lady Vikes as they started the meet off strong winning the 800-meter sprint medley with a time of 1:51.44. Caitlyn Dills, Loralei Wahling, Brooklyn Buck and Bella Lamp put together the Lady Vikes best time of the season behind a strong anchor leg from Lamp, overtaking MVAO-COU and Van Meter in the final lap to send the relay team to state.
Lamp was overjoyed with emotion following the race.
Later in the day AHSTW took the blocks and proceeded to send both teams in the 4×800 meter relay. Lady Vikes Ava Paulsen, Makenna Paulsen, Delaney Goshorn, and Bella Lamp placed second with a 10:00.77. AHSTW boys Collin Harder, Caden Geraghty, Chase Wheatley and Caleb Hatch also placed second with a time of 8:31.48 to give the boys their first state track birth of the evening.
Junior Luke Sternberg of AHSTW gave the Vikings their first solo qualification of the night in the 400-meter dash with a personal best 49.75.
This will be Sternberg’s second appearance at state track and his first appearance in the 400-meter dash.
Later in the night, Senior Nick Denning added to the Vikings state track tally, putting up a personal record in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 57.03. Denning was glad he was finally able to make it to state as an athlete.
The night wasn’t over for AHSTW as the girls closed out the meet strong, placing second in the 4×400-meter relay with a time of 4:11.93. Girls Delaney Goshorn, Ava Paulsen, Makenna Paulsen and Bella Lamp will all be participating in multiple events at state track.
Meanwhile for the Audubon girls track team, it was a slow night, despite setting team bests in the 1600-meter distance medley and the 4×400-meter relay. The Wheelers will be hoping to qualify with at-large times in the 4×100-meter shuttle hurdle relay, the 1600-meter distance medley and the 4×400-meter relay.
Official times will be released at noon on Friday.
