(Carroll, IA) — Top seeded Coon Rapids Bayard battles Moravia in the first round of the Class 1A State Baseball Tournament on Monday, coverage on KSOM.
The Crusaders are 28-3 and making their first state appearance since 2019. Legendary Head Coach John Waddle has never won a state title and is going for win number 899 in his career. The Crusaders are led by Junior SS and Pitcher Ty Heydon hitting an incredible .609 with 8 HR and 64 RBI. His older brother Senior Cal Heydon is batting .558, 7 HR and 42 RBI. On the mound, Ty Heydon is 6-0 with a 1.35 ERA.
Moravia is 27-4 and their legendary coach Bill Huisman ranks 7th all time in Iowa career wins and notched his 1,000th career victory on June 30 and has 1,005 on the season. (He won two state titles at Centerville). They are led by Junior Kale Moore who is hitting .465, 2 HR and 28 RBI. Waddle says the Mohawks generate offense with the the bunt game
Moore is also the leading pitcher with a 7-1 record and 0.98 ERA. Waddle says he is not used to missing his spots with more than one pitch
