(Creston) The Creston Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire at 3:13 p.m. on Saturday, July 18, in the 1800 block of Iris Avenue.
Firefighters determined a Chevrolet Silverado had left the roadway about a half-mile south of Highway 34, traveled through a fence and into a residential yard before returning to the road. The pickup then continued for another half-mile to the curve at Iris Avenue and 185th Street.
The accident damaged the truck’s undercarriage, punctured the fuel tank, and ignited the vehicle. A nearby resident helped remove the driver from the pickup before firefighters arrived.
Crews used water to knock down the flames, but fuel continued leaking from the ruptured tank, causing the fire to reignite. Firefighters then used a Class ABC dry-chemical fire extinguisher to fully extinguish the blaze.
The driver is believed to have experienced a medical issue that contributed to the accident.
Firefighters completed their work at 3:49 p.m. and returned to the station.
