(Audubon) – A trip to the Class 1A State Softball Tournament is on the line tonight as Exira-EHK-Audubon hosts Fremont-Mills in a regional championship matchup.
The Spartans bring a 22-4 record into the contest, while the Knights arrive at 21-3. Exira-EHK-Audubon Head Coach Tom Petersen says teams that make deep postseason runs have typically built the foundation for success throughout the regular season.
Speed will be a major storyline in the regional final. The Spartans have swiped more than 129 bases this season, led by Taryn Petersen, who has more than 40 stolen bases. Fremont-Mills has been just as aggressive on the basepaths, entering the game with 190 stolen bases.
Petersen says the Knights’ team speed is one of the biggest challenges they present and believes execution in all phases of the game will be critical if the Spartans are going to advance.
In the circle, senior Riley Miller will once again lead the Spartans. Miller has been a steady presence throughout her career and enters tonight’s regional final with a 1.62 earned run average.
