(Atlantic) On Wednesday, Atlantic’s new Mayor Grace Garrett opened her inaugural meeting with a greeting to the public. Mayor Garrett takes over the reins following former Mayor Dave Jones’ 12-years at the helm.
The newly elected Mayor went on to say this is the people’s chamber.
Garrett’s election left one at-large seat vacant, and the Atlantic City Council voted unanimously to appoint Elaine Otte. Following the Oath of Office, Otte took a seat at the City Council Table.
City councils have several options to fill vacancies. One option is to appoint an individual to the position. The notice to select must be published not less than four and not more than 20-days before the Council considers the appointment by the Iowa Code. A person appointed to fill the vacancy serves until the next city election.
The public has the right to petition for a special election within fourteen days after the appointment is made or the notice is published, whichever is later, and contains enough signatures of eligible electors of the city.
