(Warren Co.) A West Des Moines man was arrested following a shooting on Interstate 35.
Shortly after 3:30 p.m. on October 5, 2026, multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Warren County Sheriff’s Office, West Des Moines Police Department, and the Iowa State Patrol responded to reports of shots fired on Interstate 35 near the 56-mile marker. Upon arrival, officers found an adult female suffering from an apparent gunshot wound, and multiple vehicles struck by apparent gunfire. Officers provided aid to the woman, who was transported to a local hospital. Her injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.
Near the 62-mile marker, officers located Andrew Tanaka, 27, of West Des Moines after his vehicle struck another and became disabled. Tanaka was on the shoulder of the interstate, armed with a handgun. The officers were able to take Tanaka into custody without further incident. He is in the Warren County Jail facing four counts of Attempted Murder.
The shootings and investigation required the interstate to be closed for several hours to ensure the safety of the public and the investigators processing the scene.
The Warren County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation are continuing the investigation. If you have information that may assist with the investigation, please contact the Warren County Sheriff’s Office at 515-690-9216.
