(Corning, IA) — Last Thursday, Ray Helvie of Southwest Valley went over 750 career kills and she has earned our GG Harris Farm Bureau KSOM Athlete of the Week.
Southwest Valley volleyball got two big wins to stay in first place in the Pride of Iowa Conference last week, beating Mount Ayr and Nodaway Valley in three straight sets. Against the Raiderettes, Helvie had 12 Kills, 11 Digs, and 3 Blocks. Against the Wolverines, the Senior had 21 Kills, 8 Digs, 2 Aces and 1 Block.
When asked about achieving 750 kills, she did not speak a lot about it preferring to talk about her team and her teammates.
Helvie did not play varsity volleyball her freshman year but had 192 kills as a sophomore; 297 as a junior and has 272 already this year going into last night’s game against Bedford.
Helvie says she has developed her skills at the club level
Helvie is a leader and a role model; besides volleyball she does babysitting work for a young girl named Stella — she is actually hiding behind the sign on the front page of the website and Helvie says she has become her biggest fan
Helvie is 6’1″ so she has the height to potentially play volleyball in college and she is strongly pursuing that
After the win last night against Bedford, Southwest Valley is now 17-4 on the season — they host Central Decatur in the Pride of Iowa tonight.
