(Pottawattamie Co.) The Pottawattamie County Board of Supervisors has proclaimed October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The proclamation recognizes breast cancer as one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers among women, while also noting that it can affect men. It encourages residents to learn about their personal risk factors, talk with healthcare providers about screening options and emphasizes the importance of early detection.
October 13 is recognized as Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day, while October 17 through 23 is Men’s Breast Cancer Awareness Week.
The county also recognizes breast cancer survivors, those who have lost their lives to the disease, and the families, friends, caregivers, medical professionals, researchers, advocates and community organizations supporting those affected by breast cancer.
Officials from CHI Health Mercy in Council Bluffs thanked the Supervisors for their support.
Pottawattamie County encourages residents to increase their awareness, discuss screening and risk factors with their healthcare providers, support those affected by breast cancer and participate in awareness efforts throughout the community.
