(Des Moines) The Treynor girls’ basketball team is heading to Des Moines today for the first round of the Iowa Girls’ High School State Basketball Tournament. The Cardinals, with a record of 21-3, have been seeded 8th and will face the #1 seed, Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, undefeated with a record of 24-0. Head Coach Joe Chapman mentions that the team has been practicing at a different facility in preparation for this challenging match.
Facing the Rockets will be a tall order, as they boast a potent lineup that includes 6’1″ post Chloe Lyon and 6’0″ twins Molly and Kate Shafer. Molly averages 22.33 points per game, Kate averages 8.83, and Lyon contributes 2.48 points—all three players average six rebounds per game. Additionally, the Rockets have a talented point guard, 5’6″ senior Ava Eastlick, who averages 17.75 points per game.
The Cardinals also have their fair share of talent, with five players capable of scoring from anywhere on the court. Nora Konz leads Treynor, averaging 14.92 points per game, followed by Addison Mauer at 10.13, Ella Thornton at 8.92, and Claire Schrage at 8.38 points per game.
Treynor enters the contest averaging 56.79 points per game, compared to the Rockets’ 64.83 points. The Cardinals shoot 39.2% from the field and 30.5% from beyond the arc, while Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont boasts a shooting percentage of 47% from the field and 37.4% from three-point range. The game is set to tip off at 6:45 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
