(Atlantic) Track fans were treated to many outstanding performances at the boys’ Class 3A State Qualifying meet at Atlantic on Thursday night under excellent weather conditions.
The meet featured the top-class 3A sprinters in the state. For instance, in the 100 meters, five or maybe even six runners could qualify for the state meet. Four of them ran sub-11 seconds. Brevin Doll of ADM edged Cade Sears of Harlan at the tape in 10.58. Sears clocked a 10.61, Aiden Flora of ADM 10.72, and Matthew Sorfonden of Harlan 10.95. Trey Darden of Glenwood and Tye Houser of Atlantic are on the bubble at 11.08 and 11.12, respectively.
The top two finishers automatically qualify, and the following eight best times, heights, and distances across the state also secure a spot.
Meanwhile, Doll (21.43), Cade Sears (21.44), and Aiden Flora (21.82) wowed the crowd with their 200-meter performances. In the sprint relays, Harlan edged ADM in the 4×200 meters at 1:26.83, while ADM ran at 1:26.90, and the Tigers returned the favor in the 4×100 at 41.90 to Harlan’s 42.06.
ADM qualified in 12 events and started the meet with a win in the Sprint Medley Relay. Atlantic finished second with Jaice Larson, Tye Houser, and Devon Fields, with a strong anchor from freshman Grant Petty.
Speaking of Atlantic, the Trojans posted a strong showing with five events in the state meet and several others on the bubble, including the 4×400 meter relay’s third-place finish in a season-best time of 3:28.47 with baton carriers Devon Fields, Colin Rudy, Alex Sonntage, and Grant Petty. Sonntag and Rudy teamed up with Preston Williams and Bennett Whetstone for a second-place finish and an automatic bid in the 4×800 with another season-best time of 8:27.89. The Trojans Shuttle Hurdle Relay team of Dante Hedrington, Colton Rasmussen, Shelton Maulia, and Grant Petty punched their ticket to the state meet with a second-place run in a time of 1:03.81.
