(Glenwood) Glenwood rallied from a six-point deficit in the fourth quarter to defeat Atlantic 51-46 in a Hawkeye Ten Conference girl’s basketball game on Tuesday at Atlantic.
Maggie McChesney blew by her 10 points per game average with 20 to lead Glenwood. The 5’7 freshman splashed down five three-point baskets and knocked in a couple of short-range shots and a free throw. Danika Arnold scored 14; Neyla Nanfito, 9; Maggie Smith, 6; and Lydia Fuoss, 2.
Paytn Harter led the Trojans with 21 points and 19 rebounds. Makenna Schroeder came off the bench and pitched in 10, Maddie Richter, 7, Peyton McLaren, 4; Zoey Kirchhoff, 3, and Claire Pellett chipped in 2.
Atlantic held a narrow 8-7 lead after the first eight minutes.
Both offenses cranked it up a notch in the second frame. McChesney drew the hot hand for Glenwood with two key three-point buckets and two others from short-range. Danika Arnold fired in 6, and Neyla Nanfito splashed one down from three-point land, leading to a 26-22 lead at the break. Claire Pellett’s two-point basket tied the game at 12-12, and the lead changed hands three times before settling out at 26-22 in favor of the Rams at the break.
The Trojans came out with fire in the third quarter, with a 14-2 run and a 42-36 lead heading into the final eight minutes. Glenwood answered with McChesney and Nanfito connecting on two key three-point baskets, and Maggie Smith came off the bench and added six points to spark a 15-4 finish and a 51-46 win.
The Rams are now 5-4 on the season and host Shenandoah on Friday night. The Trojans are 3-9 and head to Kuemper.
