(Washington D.C.) Representative Zach Nunn from Iowa’s U.S. District #3 is currently working on a bipartisan bill that aims to prevent human trafficking, raise awareness about fentanyl, and reduce gang activity and violence. The legislation is named The Safe Schools and Communities Act and is co-led by U.S. Representative Eric Sorensen from Illinois. If passed, the bill will provide competitive grants to make public schools safer for students.
“As a father of six, keeping our children safe is my top priority,” said Rep. Nunn. “Illegal drugs, human trafficking, and violence are causing significant harm to our communities. There’s no doubt that securing our border is crucial to solving this crisis. At the same time, we can also protect our kids and save lives by implementing practical measures that address rising crime in our neighborhoods.”
Sadly, synthetic opioids, particularly fentanyl, are responsible for over 70,000 drug overdose deaths in 2021. Fentanyl poisoning is now the leading cause of death for Americans aged between 18 and 45. Human trafficking is the second-largest criminal industry in the world after drug dealing, generating approximately $32 billion each year. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, around 83% of human trafficking victims are American citizens. In Iowa alone, it’s estimated that there are 320 trafficking victims at any given time.
