Report: February Inflation Rose Faster in the Midwest Than the National Average
(Undated) — A new report finds inflation in the Midwest rose faster than the national average in February compared to a year ago. Ben Murrey with the Common Sense Institute says inflation rose from 2.4% to 2.8% in the Midwest. The CSI report finds that consumer prices are up over 26 percent since January of 2020, so much so that the average Midwestern family is spending over 1,300 dollars a month more this year than they did in 2020 just to maintain the same standard of living.
Iowa House Bill Would Impose Up To 5 Years In Prison For Disturbing A Church Service
(Des Moines, IA) — A new bill moving out of an Iowa House subcommittee would impose a penalty of up to five years in prison for disturbing a church service. Supporters say they stand by First Amendment rights, but what they call intimidating children and women in church services is inappropriate. Opponents say the current disorderly conduct law covers such disturbances, with judges having discretion to impose a penalty. The bill was introduced after anti-ICE protestors interrupted a church service in Minnesota earlier this year.
Teen Brothers Accused in Shooting Death May Face Adult Court
(Urbandale, IA) — Two teenage brothers charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of a 14-year-old boy may be tried in adult court. The 13-year-old and 14-year-old were arrested in February after the victim was found in a parking lot near Merle Hay Mall. Both teens remain in juvenile court, but the county attorney’s office has filed a motion to move their cases to adult court as youthful offenders. That means that if they’re convicted, they would stay in juvenile facilities until they turn 18, and then return to court for their cases to be re-evaluated.
