(Des Moines) Iowa State Treasurer Roby Smith has launched Money Match, a new Great Iowa Treasure Hunt initiative that will automatically return qualifying unclaimed funds to eligible Iowans without requiring them to file a claim.
The Treasurer’s Office will use secure data from the Iowa Department of Revenue to verify ownership and mail checks to eligible recipients. The office will first send a letter notifying recipients that they will receive funds, followed by a state warrant, similar to a check.
More complex claims involving estates, businesses, trusts, securities and certain owner claims will still require the traditional claims process.
Smith is encouraging Iowans to search for unclaimed property at GreatIowaTreasureHunt.gov, noting that about one in seven Iowans has funds listed in the program.
