(Atlantic) One year ago, Hope Hammontree was competing for the Atlantic girls’ tennis team at the J.V. level. This season, the sophomore has climbed the ladder to the varsity level and is off to a strong start.
Hammontree is currently 3-0 in singles play and 2-1 in doubles. For her efforts, she has been named this week’s KS95.7 Armour Insurance Trojan Athlete of the Week.
Hammontree says her goal entering the season was to improve from last year. She says the first two matches gave her an opportunity to identify what was working and what areas of her game needed the most improvement.
Playing at No. 5 singles, Hammontree opened the season with an 8-0 Win over Kuemper. She then defeated her Clarinda opponent 8-3 in No. 6 singles. On Thursday, Hammontree recorded another 8-0 Victory at the No. 6 spot.
Hammontree has also found success in doubles. In the first match of the season, she teamed with freshman Lucy Northwick for an 8-6 victory. More recently, Hammontree has been playing with Sophie Rose, and the duo is 1-1 in the season.
Atlantic travels to Shenandoah for a non-conference match Saturday morning at 9:00.
