Rodney L. Cook, 73, of rural Atlantic, Iowa, died Monday, April 29, 2024, at his home.
Rodney Lynn was born in Atlantic, Iowa on February 27, 1951, the son of Ernest Wayne and Dorothy Marie (Henderson) Cook. He attended Atlantic schools and graduated in the Class of 1969. Rod was a Vietnam Veteran in the United States Marines Corps, serving from 1969-1975 and 1978-1980. On August 5, 1972, Rod was united in marriage to Donna Marie Kirchhoff.
Rod and his brother, Garry, bought Cook’s APCO where he worked while learning the trade of an electrician. He worked at Steffen’s Electric for a few years until going on the road working for Chase Electric and Tyson Foods. Rod later opened Cook’s Electric and a majority of his contracts were in packing houses.
Rod was a lifetime member and past Commander of the VFW Post #3415, and was a member of the Lewis Fire Department since 1976; this year marking 48 years. He enjoyed camping, fishing for catfish on the river and collecting coins, tractors, firetrucks and beer steins.
Rod is survived by his wife of 51 years, Donna Cook of Atlantic; three sons, Michael (fiancé, Russell Neal) Cook, Brian (Lisa) Cook, and Jason (Trisha) Cook; four grandchildren, Grace, Peyton, Kyra and Owen; sister, Donna (Bob) Skow of Atlantic; brother, Garry Cook of Atlantic; sister-in-law, Michelle Cook of Bennington, NE; many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews; and many friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Dorothy Cook; brother, Darrin Cook; and parents-in-law, Delbert and Darlene Kirchhoff.
Visitation with the family present will be held from 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m., Thursday, May 2nd at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, May 3rd at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic with Pastor Jerry Neal of the United Congregational Methodist Church in Lewis officiating.
In honor of Rod’s dedication to service, the Lewis Fire Department will escort him to the cemetery. Burial, with military honors by the Atlantic Color Guard, will be held in the Atlantic Cemetery. The family invites you to join them for lunch at The Venue, 307 Walnut Street in Atlantic, following services at the cemetery.
