(Creston, IA) – Southwestern Community College will have a new face at the head women’s basketball coaching position for the 2024-25 season. The Spartans have announced that Greg Criswell of Lamoni is going to be bringing his almost 40 years of coaching experience at the high school level to the collegiate level for the women’s basketball program.
Criswell was the girl’s Head Coach at Urbandale High School during the 2022-23 season and just recently wrapped up coaching women’s competitive flag football at Graceland University. He formally coached at the high school level at Waukon, Winterset, Van Meter, Montezuma, and Seymour. The Lamoni native was most recently a professor at Graceland University while teaching elementary physical education and personal wellness methods courses. Before becoming a professor, he was a K-8th physical education teacher in the Waukon School District and was the Winterset High School principal from 1997-2010.
“I am very grateful to the SWCC administration for giving me this great opportunity to lead the women’s basketball program and to be a part of the SWCC family,” stated Criswell. Our team will work hard, play smart, and finish with PASSION,” said Criswell. “Our players will be expected to be positive, great teammates and strive to be outstanding role models. Our program expectations are to establish and maintain a culture of doing things the right way, eventually leading to overall program credibility and success. We understand and embrace the challenges that lie ahead, but we are confident that we can accomplish great things for years to come.”
He will be taking over a program that went 8-23 last season and 6-14 in conference play. A local athlete from Griswold, McKenna Wiechman will be playing for Criswell for the upcoming season.
Criswell is jumping into the recruiting role after officially taking over the program as of today, May 22nd. He will also hold the position of Director of Residential Life alongside his women’s basketball coaching role.
