(Ann Arbor, MI) – Iowa Hawkeye Mike Stein was featured in the top spot this weekend at the Big Ten Track and Field Championships in the javelin throw. Stein was able to earn the top spot and break the meet record with his throw for Iowa.
The sophomore was able to throw 81.19 meters or 266’4″ that ranked second in Division I and was the new meet record at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships which gives Stein his new personal best. An Olympic-level throw has earned the Milford, Iowa native a qualification for the U.S. Olympic Trials.
This throw came on Stein’s sixth attempt in the javelin against Nebraska’s Dash Sirmon.
“It was a battle,” said Stein. “I didn’t have the numbers or the energy that I wanted in the early rounds, and I honestly felt light-headed. I had a peanut butter sandwich, battled back, and just relaxed. It’s like Bruce Lee said: be water, my friend.”
Stein now holds gold in an incredible performance that featured multiple Hawkeye teammates in top spots this weekend.
