(College Park, MD)- The powerhouse that is Iowa wrestling this season suffers a rough weekend at the Big Ten Championships as only one Hawkeye makes the finals and the team finishes fourth overall. The lone championship match for Iowa would feature No. 3 Zach Glazier who ultimately fell to Penn State’s top ranked Aaron Brooks at 197lbs by tech fall. The Hawkeyes were able to rack up a few place winners regardless of the lack of championship bouts.
Drake Ayala, Real Woods, and Michael Caliendo were all able to take the third place position on the podium at their respective weight classes as Ayala and Woods get revenge for regular season losses and Caliendo wins in sudden victory. There wouldn’t be a chance for four third place Hawkeyes as Jared Franek would medical forfeit and take fourth at 157lbs. Four more Iowa wrestlers would take the fifth place spot on the podium.
As a team, the Hawkeye squad would finish fourth with 110.5 points, just 7.5 points shy of Nebraska who finished third. Penn Sate would lead the way for the team scores with 170.5 points.
Next up is the National Championships in Kansas City on March 21st.
