Iowa Voters Head To The Polls Today For The Primary Election
(Des Moines, IA) — Iowans head to the polls today for the primary election. Voters will cast ballots in key races to determine nominees for Governor, U.S. Senate, U.S. House, State Auditor, and several other contests ahead of the November general election. Candidates must receive at least 35-percent of the vote to win the nomination. If no candidate reaches that threshold, the nominee will be selected at a party convention. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

(Muscatine, IA) — Seven people are dead after shootings in Muscatine, including the accused shooter. Police say they responded to a home on Park Avenue early Monday afternoon after reports of shots fired. Four victims were found dead inside the home. Muscatine Police Chief Anthony Kies [[ KEYS ]] says officers then located the suspect, 52-year-old Ryan Willis McFarland, on a trail near the pedestrian bridge. As officers were speaking with him, McFarland took his own life. Investigators learned there could be additional victims, and found two adult men deceased at two different locations. All victims are believed to be members of McFarland’s family. The shootings are still under investigation.

(Johnston, IA) — An officer-involved shooting in Johnston leaves a deputy injured and the suspect dead. Polk County Sheriff’s Lieutenant Mark Chance says deputies and U.S. Marshalls were serving the suspect with a mental health order and criminal mischief warrant from another county. He says the suspect barricaded himself into the garage of the home, and shot a deputy in the hand when law enforcement got the garage door open. The deputy has non-life-threatening injuries. The officers returned fire, and the suspect set the garage on fire. Chance says the suspect was ultimately found deceased in the garage. It’s still unclear how the suspect died. The Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation is leading an inquiry into the shooting.

(Mason City, IA) — A private investigator claims he has a solid lead about the disappearance of Jodi Huisentruit [[ HOO-sen-trute ]]. She was a TV news anchor in Mason City who police believe was abducted on her way to work just over 30 years ago. Private Investigator Steve Ridge, who has been looking into the case for seven years, says the suspect told a romantic partner what happened to Huisentruit just months after her disappearance. Ridge says he has passed the information onto the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, which hasn’t commented.

(Ames, IA) — The world’s largest steam locomotive rolled through Central Iowa Monday. The Department of Transportation posted video of Big Boy, the train that left Wyoming last week on a ten-stop journey across the country to celebrate American’s 250th birthday. It passed through Ames Monday morning on the way to Chicago. Big Boy is 133 feet long and weighs one-point-two-million pounds.
