(Cass Co.) The Cass County Board of Supervisors this morning approved the hiring of William Baylor as the part-time Cass County Veterans Affairs Director, effective June 9.
Baylor will take over for Mitch Holmes, who is retiring effective July 1. The position was recently reduced from full-time to part-time.
The board spoke with Veterans Affairs Commissioner Terry Duggan about establishing checkpoints so the position can be reevaluated after 90 days to determine whether the part-time arrangement is working.
Supervisor Bernard Pettinger said he remains interested in discussing the possibility with the Audubon County Board of Supervisors of eventually sharing a full-time Veterans Affairs Director between the two counties. Baylor said his immediate focus is serving Cass County veterans.
Supervisor Wendy Richter said that reducing the position to part-time, or discussing the possibility of sharing the position with another county, is not intended to take anything away from veterans or the services they receive.
The supervisors voted 4-1 to approve Baylor’s hiring as the Cass County Veterans Affairs Director. Richter cast the lone nay vote. Baylor will be paid $23 per hour and work up to 24 hours per week, with evaluations conducted every 90 days.
