(Boone) The Iowa High School Athletic Association released the results of the amendment to the Incorporation articles regarding football classification.
According to the press release, 263 schools cast votes, 211 voted yes, and 52 districts voted no. The amendment needed 50 percent to pass.
The amended classification model is similar to one currently used by the Minnesota State High School League – reducing 40 percent of a school’s free or reduced lunch count from their annual enrollment to determine their final classification number.
Classifications in Iowa high school athletics are currently determined solely by enrollment. If approved by the Iowa State Board of Education, the socioeconomic factor would apply to IHSAA football starting in the 2023-24 school year.
Pending that approval, the IHSAA Board of Control will review, discuss, and consider IHSAA administrative staff recommendations concerning the Eight-Player enrollment cap, currently at 120 or permitted by exception.
