(Johnston, Iowa) August is recognized as National Wellness Month, making it the perfect time to focus on self-care and establish healthy habits. One impactful way to take care of yourself and your community is by donating blood at LifeServe Blood Center this month.
According to the press release, a single blood donation can help save up to three lives in your area. Beyond the satisfaction of helping others, each donation includes a mini health screening. During this process, staff will check your blood pressure, pulse, and temperature, and test your cholesterol and hemoglobin levels. These screenings can uncover potential health issues you may not even be aware of. According to Dr. Alex Smith, Medical Director at LifeServe Blood Center,
“High blood pressure often has no symptoms, and low hemoglobin could be an early sign of anemia or iron deficiency.” Research shows that many donors, particularly younger and first-time donors, often discover elevated blood pressure or other health concerns during donation.”
If any of your test results fall outside the normal range, LifeServe will inform you and allow you to follow up with your healthcare provider. Additionally, donors can keep track of their health history and donations through the LifeServe Donor Portal. Thus, by donating blood, you not only assist those in need but also gain insight into your own well-being.
This National Wellness Month, LifeServe is asking residents to consider making blood donation a new healthy habit that benefits both their health and their community.
