(Underwood, IA) — Underwood baseball was denied a fourth straight trip to Carroll for the state baseball tournament, falling in the substate finals on Tuesday night to Orange City Unity Christian 4-0. Adler Van Essen for the Knights threw a two hit shutout to end the Eagles season at 22-5. Underwood was used to going to the state tournament so its got to be disappointing that they will not make the trip to Merchants Park. Head Coach Andy Vanfossan hopes this team realizes they still had a great season
Underwood has just two seniors — Ryker Adair and Connor Brummett — and there is only one junior Kyle Sub who mostly played in the field and did not hit. This team was comprised of mostly sophomores and freshmen. All of the pitchers were underclassmen. Vanfossan says they learned a lot throughout the season
Sophomore Blake Brensel was a two way star with the bat and the arm. Sophomore Hudson Ross healed up from a track injury and took over the shortstop position and put up amazing numbers on the mound. Other sophomores include CF Maddox Mechaelsen, Gavin Miles, Coltin Johnson, Ryan Fletcher, Gabe Burns, and Jaedyn Van Scoyk. The freshmen were Keaton Hawkins, Owen Fletcher and Jackson Stanfill. Vanfossan says the priority is for them to get stronger in the off season
Vanfossan believes this team did well and overcame the loss of Garrett Luett who chose not to play his senior season and prepare for his future career at the University of Iowa.
