(Ames, IA) Honeyberries are gaining attention in Iowa as a possible new crop for growers and a superfood for consumers. The small berries are similar to blueberries.
Randall Vos, a crop specialist at Iowa State University, says the berries do so well in Iowa because they don’t need highly acidic soil like blueberries do. They are also not commonly bothered by pests and diseases, and their small size makes them suitable for all garden sizes.
The berries are packed with nutrients and may have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits. This supports cardiovascular, metabolic, and cognitive health. Due to their tart flavor, honeyberries are commonly consumed fresh, frozen, or in jams.
