(Des Moines) A Significant Winter Storm is expected to bring heavy snow and freezing rain across the state beginning Tuesday morning.
The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning for central Iowa and Audubon, Adair, Adams, Carroll, Cass, Crawford, Guthrie, Taylor, and Union.
The winter storm will bring widespread snowfall, followed by periods of a wintry mix, including freezing rain that will make travel difficult.
Moderate to heavy snow is anticipated over nearly all central Iowa, with heaviest amounts, greater than six inches, possible from the southwest into east-central Iowa. The transition to a wintry mix, including freezing rain, will begin Tuesday Night and further deteriorate travel conditions. Nearly all of Interstates 80 and 35 will be affected across Iowa.
The Winter Storm Warning goes into effect from 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday to 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday.
Travel could be challenging. The hazardous conditions could especially impact the Tuesday morning and Wednesday evening commutes. The snow and ice weight may also result in sagging tree limbs and damage, with power outages possible.
If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. The latest road conditions for the state you are calling from can be obtained by calling 5-1-1.
