(Atlantic) Atlantic Schools Superintendent Steve Barber says the construction project at Trojan Bowl and the baseball-softball diamonds is moving forward thanks to the favorable weather conditions.
Barber reported to the School Board on Wednesday, construction crews are moving dirt, working on the base of the concession stand, and the retaining wall should be completed on Thursday. Additionally, the concession stand materials are projected to go up at the end of the month with the goal of completing that portion of the project by April 1st. “We should be going great guns after that,” said Barber. “I don’t want to use the word ahead or behind. We’re ahead in regards to moving dirt and behind in the construction of the concession stand. If they’re able to get those two concession stands built by April 1st, I would say we’ll be ahead of schedule.”
Barber says a news release will soon come out outlining the fund-raising efforts for the turf at Trojan Bowl. The Recognition levels include; Trojan Head, $50,000 and above, Letter Winner, $10,000 to $49,000, Gold, $5,000 to $9,999, Black, $1,000 to $2,499, and Players, $300.00 to $999.00.The original plan didn’t include the turf, but the committee decided to add the turf when they learned they could raise the money so the renovation project could be completed by the start of the 2020 football season if all goes well.
The project also included new scoreboards, and Atlantic High School Athletic Director Andy Mitchell presented the board with the three options. Mitchell says the video board at the high school track shows the eight finishers and their times. Mitchell says the scoreboard must also meet the size requirements to be visible by the spectators in the stands. There’s also going to be a scoreboard above the video board no matter what size the district goes with.
On another topic, Atlantic Schools Superintendent Steve Barber talked about the staff’s 30-day challenge beginning January 13. The components of the challenge include nutrition, sleep, hydration, exercise, and leadership and life fit activities. As of Wednesday morning, 101 staff members signed up to participate. “We hope this is a wonderful experience for the staff members involved with this,” said Barber. “I hope it’s meaningful and beneficial for the physical and emotional health of the people involved.”
In other activities, school district officials are working with Snyder and Associates to ensure the sidewalk project in front of the middle school meets ADA requirements. Steve Barber says portions of the sidewalks are in bad shape. He says Snyder and Associates will present a cost estimate so the project can go out for bid. Barber says the district ensures local concrete businesses will have an opportunity to bid the project.
Additionally, a cost estimate for the Schuler gym roof replacement project is also in the works. He says the roof is showing wear and tear, along with areas of puddling, which has caused some issues during heavy rain events. He says the replacement project will address these issues.
Under the action items, the school board set the public hearings for the 2019-2020 amended certified budget and 2020-2021 school master calendar for February 12th. Last year the certified budget was approved prior to the passing of the bond issue and didn’t include any expenditures for the athletic facilities improvement project.
In other business, the board approved the SBRC Modified Supplemental Amount for At-Risk/Drop out prevention, and approved pay application number 2 for the Athletic Facilities Improvement Project for the amount of $174,400.37.
