Dennis Immel, 80, of Adair, Iowa, passed away Monday, March 2, 2020, at Edinburg Regional Medical Center in Edinburg, TX.
Dennis was born January 4, 1940, in Adair, Iowa, to Floyd and Laura (Faga) Immel. He was raised on their family farm East of Exira. Dennis was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church, North of Adair. He attended country school, Audubon #1 and then went on to high school in Adair. He graduated from Exira High School with the class of 1958. (Following redistricting)
Dennis enlisted in the US Air Force in May of 1962. He served until June of 1964. He was discharged early after his father’s death, and returned to the family farm. There he farmed in a partnership with his brother Jerry for over 30 years.
He was united in marriage to Leslie Gene Schwisow on November 8, 1971, in Blair, NE. They made their home on the farm east of Exira. Leslie was a big help in the farming operation. In 2016 they moved into the town of Adair.
Dennis served on his church council in many capacities. After the closing of St. John’s Lutheran Church he became a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Anita.
With some wifely persuasion, Dennis and Leslie traveled to all 50 states, all of the Canadian Provinces, and most of Mexico, Central and South America, Cuba, Europe and Australia. Dennis and Leslie loved to spend their winters in warmer climate. For over 30 years, they danced, played cards and played pool with their many friends.
Dennis loved fast cars, with a special love for ’57 Chevy’s and Go Karts. He participated in many racing events, in which he was talented enough to win several first place trophies.
Dennis is survived by his wife of 48 years, Leslie; their children: son, Eric (Deb) Schwisow; daughters, Sheryl (David) Lemmon, Vickie (Scott) Chapin, Veronica (Darrin) Merrill, and Dawn (Bob) Dittmer; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren; sister, Carol Long; brother, Jerry Immel; and numerous nieces and nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Memorials may be made to Adair Fire and Rescue.
Visitation with family will be from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., with a memorial service starting at 11:00 a.m., on Monday, March 9, 2020, at Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home in Adair, Iowa.
A private military service will be held at Pleasant Hill Cemetery at a later date.
