(Underwood, IA) — The Underwood Baseball team will have a completely different look this year — star player Garrett Luett has decided not to play for the Eagles his senior season. Instead, he is getting ready for his career at the University of Iowa by playing in a league for college freshmen in Tennessee. That leaves Head Coach Andy Vanfossan with a young team with only two seniors this year. However, while everybody relied on Luett in the past, now its time for these young players to show what they are made of says Vanfossan
The pitching staff is young and Underwood had a setback when Hudson Ross suffered an injury during track season and will be out for a while. The Eagles do not have a pitcher who is overpowering like Luett — Vanfossan will rely on Sophomores Blake Brensel (4-3. 2.20 ERA last year) and Ryan Fletcher (3-0, 1.91 ERA) to lead the way
Offensively, Brensel only hit .091 last year but he started his season on Tuesday with 2 HR in a 16-6 win over Missouri Valley — he is part of a sophomore class that includes Maddox Mechaelsen who moves from catcher to center field; Gavin Miles who moves behind the plate, and Coltin Johnson that represents part of the new core of the team. Vanfossan will also rely on his two seniors Ryker Adair and Connor Brummett
Underwood hosts Audubon Wednesday; is at IKM Manning on Thursday and finishes the week hosting AHSTW.
They will host Tri Center on Monday, coverage on KSOM.
