(Atlantic) Currently, Vision Atlantic has raised $34.1 million toward its $39 million goal to fund a 300-capacity childcare center and YMCA expansion. Combined with a $18 million, 142-unit housing development, the projects are expected to generate a $48 million community impact.
Vision Atlantic President Christina Bateman shared an update Monday at the Cass County Community Center, noting the housing project is underway and will be built over four years. It includes a mix of housing types, with 48 units currently under construction, and soon will be for sale, and an open house is planned sometime in the next two to three weeks.
Bateman said a childcare center near 18th and Olive streets is the second phase. The Lakin Foundation has contributed $8.6 million toward the childcare and YMCA projects, along with a $23 million housing endowment. She said the childcare project will help address affordability and workforce challenges.

The YMCA expansion, the third phase, will add senior and teen spaces, a children’s museum, an outdoor patio, and upgraded fitness areas. Lakin Foundation Vice-President John Hoich, appearing at Monday’s event, expressed his appreciation for seeing the impact the Charles E. Lakin Foundation has had on communities and their people in southwest Iowa.
Hoich praised Dan Haynes, executive director of the Nishna Valley Family YMCA, for offering programs and opportunities for all ages at the facility.
Christina Bateman said the goal is to reach the $39 million fundraising target by the end of the year. She noted the campaign is currently 87 percent complete, with more work needed to secure the Lakin Foundation’s $8.6 million grant for the childcare center and YMCA expansion.
