(Atlantic) Glenwood used a huge first inning to power past Atlantic 15-5 in Hawkeye Ten Conference baseball action Thursday in Atlantic.
The Rams came out swinging, scoring eight runs on six hits in the top of the first inning. The first eight Glenwood batters reached base and all came around to score. Ben Carlo ripped a two-run single, Brennan Anderson followed with another two-RBI base hit, and Pierce Dalton added an RBI double. Leadoff hitter Korbin Pelzer went 2-for-2 in the inning with an RBI, while Ryan Turner also chipped in with a hit.
After Hudson McLaren started the game for Atlantic, Grant Petty came on in relief to close out the opening frame and held Glenwood scoreless through the next three innings. Atlantic Head Coach Nathan Block applauded Petty’s effort.
Meanwhile, the Trojans began to chip away at the deficit, scoring one run in the third, another in the fourth, and two more in the fifth to narrow the gap to 8-4 and keep themselves within striking distance.
However, Glenwood halted the comeback bid with a run in the sixth and exploded for six more in the seventh to seal the victory. The Rams scored 15 runs on eleven hits. Ben Carlo led the visitors with a 4 for five performance a the plate with two doubles, two singles, and four RBI. Pierce Dalton batting in the eighth spot went two four three with a double, a single, and two RBI. Brennan Anderson stroked a two RBI single, Benn Christiansen, the conference leader in batting average hitting .474, ended the contest with a double, and a single, and Ryan Turner stroked a single.
The Trojans tallied five runs on seven hits in the loss. Kale Jensen led the way, going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a walk, collecting two singles and a double. Zaydin Parker added a pair of doubles, while Keston Schmitt contributed an RBI double.
With the win, Glenwood improves to 3-11 and is set to face ADM and Sergeant Bluff-Luton on Saturday. Atlantic, now 1-10, will host Mount Pleasant that same day.
