Makenzie Renee Bates, the beloved daughter of Aaron Scott and Megan Christine (Goolsby), was born on October 3, 2025, in Atlantic, IA. She passed away on May 2, 2025, at the age of 19 years.
Makenzie spent several years living in Oakland, IA, before moving to Griswold, IA. She attended school in Griswold until the 12th grade and graduated from Red Oak High School. Makenzie was employed at Nishna Productions in Red Oak.
Makenzie was a beloved individual who found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She had a deep affection for giraffes and took great pride in nurturing her plants at home. Her love for chocolate was well-known, often indulging in it with a playful spirit. Makenzie cherished her collection of blankets and candles, finding comfort in their warmth and light.
One of her favorite pastimes was driving around, a cherished activity that brought her peace and happiness in any mood. She frequently visited her grandpa’s headstone, finding solace in these moments of connection. Makenzie had a fondness for the zoo and enjoyed trips to Bath and Body Works, delighting in the scents of candles and soaps. She loved spontaneous outings to Walmart, particularly favoring the Atlantic location, and enjoyed taking her dogs to the park.
Makenzie treasured quiet evenings at home, watching movies on the couch with loved ones. Her partner often surprised her with chocolate, knowing it brought her joy. Her laughter and light-hearted nature were infectious, and she was deeply loved by those who knew her.
Survived by parents Aaron Scott and Megan Christine (Goolsby) Bates, boyfriend Will Griffey, brothers Alex Bates and Dante Watkins, sister Jordyn Toha, grandmother Angie Goolsby, Aunt Caleigh (Nick) Christian, Uncle Josh Goolsby, Aunt Desiree Misbach, Uncle Brian (Kathy) Bates, Uncle Kevin (Dacia) Bates, cousins Gavin, Bailey, Jaxon, Greyson, Easton, Waylon, Allie, Chris (Jesi) and Sya, and many other family and friends.
Preceded in death by grandfather Dennis Bates, grandmother Linda Lantz, and brother Cameron Watkins.
A celebration of life funeral service will be held Saturday, May 10, 2025, at 2:00 PM, at the Griswold Central Church of Christ. Visitation with the family will follow the service until 5:00 PM. Interment will be at a later date. Rieken Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold is assisting the family with arrangements.
