(Atlantic) September is Suicide Prevention Month, and last week, Cass Health’s Senior Life Solutions team organized a community walk at Atlantic City Park to support the cause. The goal of the event was to raise awareness about signs indicating suicidal thoughts or potential suicide attempts so that friends, family, and loved ones can intervene and help prevent suicide.
Jeff Christensen, a resident of Atlantic, experienced a tragic loss when he found his stepfather deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in late February 2016.
Jeff’s mother had passed away two years before his stepfather’s-death, and he had worried about his well-being initially but thought he was getting better as time went on. Jeff did not notice any warning signs and believed his stepfather was improving.
Following his stepfather’s-death, Jeff struggled with feelings of guilt, which triggered mental health issues.
And he still grapples with it today.
Jeff acknowledges that therapy is a valuable mental health tool for individuals dealing with depression or anxiety.
For anyone struggling, it’s essential to know that help is available. You can dial 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Additionally, Law enforcement can conduct a welfare check if you are concerned about a loved one or haven’t heard from a close friend or family member.
