(Glenwood) The 10th-rated Glenwood Rams defended their home field Friday night, defeating Atlantic 63-48 in a high-scoring non-district football game.
The Rams piled up 551 total yards of offense with 403 yards rushing and 148 yards passing. Haze Stephens led the ground game with 16 carries for 140 yards and one touchdown. Dylan Powles carried the ball 13 times for 136 yards and four touchdowns. Ben Carlo completed 11 of 18 passes for 148 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception.
Glenwood Head Coach Cory Faust had these comments after the game.
Atlantic finished the game with 284 yards of total offense, with 182 yards passing and 102 yards rushing. Sophomore quarterback James Brauer was 12 of 19, throwing the football for 182 yards. Zander Killion caught four passes for 82 yards and three touchdowns. Ethan McNeal carried the ball 17 times for 68 yards. McNeal also scored on an 86-yard kickoff return. Senior fullback Jake Wailes carried the ball four times for 35 yards and one touchdown. Sophomore Benton McLaren had a 74-yard kick return for a touchdown. Carter Hadley led the defense with 10 tackles, and Dreven Smith had four tackles, one sack, and one fumble recovery. Eric Albert also recovered a fumble for the Trojans.
Atlantic Head Coach Joe Brummer says that despite the loss, he saw a lot of good things from his football team.
Glenwood struck first when Ben Carlo connected with Myles Longmeyer on a 34-yard touchdown pass with 8:29 remaining in the first quarter. Atlantic answered immediately, as sophomore Benton McLaren returned the ensuing kickoff 74 yards for a touchdown to tie the game at 7-7.
Carlo put the Rams back in front with a three-yard touchdown run with 4:49 left in the quarter, but Atlantic again answered on special teams. Ethan McNeal returned a kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown to tie the game at 14-14.
Glenwood then scored three straight touchdowns to take control. Haze Stephens scored on a 52-yard run, Joe Leick added a 23-yard touchdown run, and Dylan Powles scored on a 23-yard run to give the Rams a 35-14 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Atlantic cut into the deficit early in the second quarter when Jake Wailes scored on an 18-yard touchdown run, making it 35-21.
Glenwood answered with a 28-yard touchdown pass from Carlo to Longmeyer with 6:19 remaining in the first half to extend the lead to 42-21.
The Trojans responded with a 42-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback James Brauer to Zander Killion, cutting the deficit to 42-28.
Glenwood closed the half with another short touchdown run from Powles to take a 48-28 lead into halftime.
Atlantic came out firing in the second half, scoring back-to-back touchdowns to cut the Glenwood lead to 49-42. Brauer connected with Wailes and Killion on touchdown passes to bring the Trojans back into the game.
The Rams answered with two more touchdown runs by Powles, covering 18 and 31 yards, to push the lead to 63-42.
Brauer and Killion connected again midway through the fourth quarter on a 23-yard touchdown pass, cutting the Glenwood lead to 63-48.
That would be the final score, as Glenwood held on for the 63-48 victory.
