(Greenfield) Fourteen teams are on the list to attend Nodaway Valley/O-M’s Coach Riley Wrestling Invite on Saturday.
The Wolverines got off to a good start to the season with three dual victories on Thursday night and will try to carry that momentum into Saturday’s competition against some quality opponents. “We have the home tournament, Coach Riley Tournament, this weekend. We have 14 tough teams coming here. A few 2A and 3A teams with Knoxville and Clarinda. AHSTW who we will see in our district. Then the regulars of Bedford, Lenox, Mount Ayr, Clarke, and some of those. I’ve been looking at some potential brackets and we have a lot of kids and there’s going to be some great matchups here this weekend. We are looking forward to hosting that.”
The Wolverines beat West Central Valley, ACGC, and East Union in duals on Thursday. “The biggest thing that stood out to me is our kids came out and fought they had a lot of grit.” Coach Brad Honnold says, “Our young kids really stepped up.”
Coach Brad Honnold says Ashton Honnold, Trent Warner, and Keyin Steeve all had big wins against ACGC. Against West Central Valley there were a few other wrestlers that delivered. “Bradley Gebbie was a key contributor. He was getting beat pretty handedly and attempted a move that we had just learned the night before in practice. He perfected it and got the pin against West Central Valley. That was a pivotal win. Two other guys that might not be seen as the top dogs on our team came up with wins and that was our 120 pounder Slade Gettler and a 195/220 pounder Charles Rudolph who gritted out a tough 6-5 win against West Central Valley to secure the dual victory.”
The team lost just nine matches in three duals on Thursday.
