(Red Oak) Montgomery County Sheriff Joe Sampson retired on Thursday after 46-years in law enforcement.
Sheriff Sampson held several positions in his career, including; Military Police, Game Warden, Griswold Police Officer, Griswold Police Chief for around 16-years. Midnight deputy for the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Montgomery County Chief Deputy, director of jail and civil procedures, and Montgomery County Sheriff for the past 12-years.
Sampson says his interest in law enforcement began with a visit from military personnel while he was in high school in 1973.
That’s where his career all started as a military police officer.
Sampson says some of his fondest memories throughout his career is working with the people and his involvement with the new jail built six years ago. The new jail replaced the antiquated facility deemed the oldest working jail in Iowa.
Sheriff Sampson says some of the biggest changes in law enforcement over the years has been in technology.
When asked about his plans during retirement, he says his wife Margaret has a list of things to get done shortly, and spend his leisure time, hunting, fishing, and traveling.
