Black County Sheriff Sends Fraud Investigation Report To Prosecutors
(Des Moines, IA) — The results of a fraud investigation against a candidate for Lieutenant Governor are being turned over to prosecutors. The Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office is confirming a fraud investigation of a company owned by Derek Wulf, running mate of Republican candidate for governor Zach Lahn. The Des Moines Register first reported the sheriff saying he received a complaint in February of possible fraudulent activity by Wulf’s Shallow Creek Land and Livestock company from a bank. The sheriff says the findings have been turned over to the Black Hawk County attorney’s office. No charges have been filed against Wulf. Lahn is calling it a politicized witch hunt.
Eleven Members Of UI Center For Intellectual Freedom Advisory Committee Resign
(Iowa City, IA) — Eleven members of the University of Iowa Center for Intellectual Freedom Advisory Committee are resigning. The Iowa Board of Regents says it appreciates the work the former committee members put in to the Center, but accepts their resignations. The advisory committee still has 15 remaining members. The Center for Intellectual Freedom was created by Iowa Republican lawmakers in 2025 to promote government and civic education. The Center’s executive committee is set to meet Friday to continue the search for a permanent director.
Des Moines Man Sentenced In Sex Trafficking Case
(Des Moines, IA) — A Des Moines man convicted for sex trafficking homeless women will spend the rest of his life in prison. Federal prosecutors say Dave Shumpert The Third coerced three vulnerable women into commercial sex acts using threats, violence, drugs and fear. The Department of Justice says the 30-year-old targeted young drug addicted homeless women with the help of a co-conspirator. Prosecutors say Shumpert continued directing the operation from jail after his arrest and even received over 32-thousand dollars on his commissary accounts from the victims’ commercial sex proceeds. Morrison was sentenced to 14 years in prison.
Adult Dead, Child Missing After Accident During Field Trip At Lake Macbride Tuesday
(Johnson County, IA) — An adult is dead and a child is still missing after an accident during a school field trip at Lake Macbride Tuesday. The Iowa City Community School District says fifth graders from Borlaug Elementary School were at the Macbride Nature Recreation Area for a School of the Wild trip yesterday. Police responded to reports of people in the water just after noon and an adult’s body was recovered from the lake by responders. Crews continued searching for a missing child through the evening. The district is calling it a tragic accident and says its thoughts are with affected family members and loved ones.
