(Des Monies, IA) The Animal Rescue League of Iowa says its Animal Welfare and Response Team rescued 59 animals from two separate animal welfare situations within three days.
In southwest Iowa, the team helped authorities remove 56 small dogs from filthy conditions inside a house and camper. The dogs were covered in fleas, including a mother and two nursing puppies. Some had eye and dental problems, while another had multiple injuries believed to be caused by other dogs in the crowded living conditions.
The dogs are now receiving care from the Animal Rescue League’s Miracle Medical Team.
Less than 48 hours later, the team traveled to southeast Iowa to rescue three severely malnourished horses. The horses had no food, and their only access to water was across a mud pit they sank into while trying to cross.
Despite the risks of transporting the weak animals, the team rushed the horses to Iowa State University’s equine veterinary hospital.
The Animal Rescue League is asking for donations to help care for the animals and support future rescue efforts.
