Driver, Dog Injured After Crash Into Des Moines Apartment
(Des Moines, IA) — A driver and a dog are injured after a car crashed into an apartment on Des Moines’ east side Thursday. Police say a 72-woman drove into the apartment on Guthrie Avenue at about 6:30 p.m. She was taken to a hospital and a dog inside the home was taken to an emergency vet, both with minor injuries. Investigators say they believe impaired driving is a factor in the crash. No charges have yet been filed against the driver.
Flags Ordered At Half Staff In Iowa To Commemorate 9/11 Attacks
(Des Moines, IA) — Flags across Iowa will fly at half-staff Friday for the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Eight of the nearly 3,000 victims killed in the attacks were from Iowa. Governor Kim Reynolds says flags will remain at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Friday in the Capitol Complex and at all public buildings and grounds throughout the state. Individuals, schools and local governments are encouraged to lower their flags as a sign of respect.
Iowa Universities Report Strong Fall Enrollment
(Des Moines, IA) — Iowa’s three public universities are reporting strong enrollment numbers this fall. The University of Northern Iowa says enrollment has reached nine-thousand-366 students, its highest level since 2020. Iowa State University has enrolled more than 30,000 students, while the University of Iowa reports a total enrollment of more than 31,000 students. Both schools also welcomed freshman classes of more than five thousand students.

Iowa Drought Conditions Easing
(Des Moines, IA) — Drought conditions are easing in a part of Iowa that’s been dry for weeks. This week’s National Drought Monitor Map shows areas of moderate drought in Northwest Iowa cut in half. There’s also a slight reduction in near-drought in Western Iowa. This week’s map does show a new, very small area of near-drought in Eastern Iowa. Right now, three-quarters of Iowa is drought-free.
Governor Reynolds Issues Harvest Proclamation
(Des Moines, IA) — Some regulations have been temporarily loosened on Iowa’s highways. Governor Kim Reynolds has issued a harvest proclamation, which allows vehicles transporting corn, soybeans, hay, straw, silage, stover, fertilizer, and manure to be overweight without a permit for the length of the proclamation. While vehicles may be overweight, they may not exceed 90,000 pounds. The proclamation applies to all Iowa highways, not including the interstate system, and is effective immediately through October 10th.
