(Lincoln, NE) — Fred Hoiberg and the Nebraska Cornhuskers men’s basketball are keeping their core staff in place. Hoiberg announced Tuesday that assistant coaches Nate Loenser, Ernie Zeigler and Pat Monaghan, along with general manager Luca Virgilio, have all signed multi-year contract extensions.
Hoiberg credited the group for Nebraska’s recent success, pointing to the staff’s role in player development and the program’s continued rise. He noted Loenser, Zeigler and Virgilio have been instrumental in building a winning culture over the past four years, while Monaghan quickly made his presence felt with his recruiting efforts and overall impact.
Loenser, who has been promoted to associate head coach, just wrapped up his fifth season with the Huskers. He oversees the team’s defense and individual skill development, helping Nebraska rank among the nation’s top defensive teams last season, including leading the Big Ten in scoring defense.
Zeigler, in his fourth season on staff, has played a key role in the Huskers’ offensive approach, while also contributing heavily in scouting and recruiting. His experience includes work with 10 NCAA Tournament teams during his coaching career.
Monaghan, who joined the program in April 2025, contributes across all areas, including player development and recruiting. He helped Nebraska reach new heights this past season, including a school-record 28 wins and the program’s first-ever Sweet 16 appearance.
Virgilio, the longest-tenured member of Hoiberg’s staff, continues to serve as general manager. He oversees roster construction, player evaluation and recruiting efforts at all levels, including high school, international prospects and the transfer portal.
