Security Has Increased On The IC Ped Mall Following A Shooting On April 19
(Iowa City, IA) — Security has increased on the Pedestrian Mall in Iowa City after a shooting that injured five people just over a week ago. University of Iowa Campus Safety says four additional University of Iowa officers started conducting joint patrols with Iowa City Police officers this weekend. The patrols will continue on Friday and Saturday nights during peak hours. Police are still looking for the suspect, 17-year-old Damarian Jones of Cedar Rapids. Anyone with information about his location is asked to contact Crime Stoppers.
1 Teen Dead, 2 People Injured After Weekend Shootings In Des Moines
(Des Moines, IA) — One teen is dead and two people are injured after Saturday shootings in Des Moines. Police say the teenager was found seriously hurt after a shooting in Highland Park at about 3:30 Saturday afternoon. The teen was taken to the hospital where they later died, marking the eleventh murder in Des Moines so far in 2026. In a separate shooting later the same day, two victims were shot in the Drake University neighborhood. Police responded to the scene just before 10 p.m. to find shell casings on the ground along with an abandoned gun. The two victims went to hospitals on their own.

Soumik Sarkar, Director of Translational AI at Iowa State University, says they’ll be more like advanced kitchen appliances. Sarkar says self-driving cars and some assembly line automations are already incorporating Artificial Intelligence in machinery, making them AI robots by definition.
Former Waterloo Police Officer Sentenced To Prison For Crash That Killed His Girlfriend
(Waterloo, IA) — A man who pleaded guilty for causing a crash that killed his girlfriend will spend more than a decade in prison. Court documents show Keaton Northup was drunk when he crashed his motorcycle while his girlfriend was a passenger in 2024. Prosecutors say he hit speeds of more than 100 miles-per-hour, and hit blood alcohol level was more than three-times over the legal limit. He pleaded guilty earlier this month to charges including homicide by vehicle and OWI.
Man Found Guilty In Deadly Davenport Shooting
(Davenport, IA) — A Scott County jury is convicting an East Moline man in a deadly 2024 Davenport shooting. Johnathan Terrones was found guilty of first-degree murder in the killing of Mason Payne. Police say Payne was found shot to death August 24th, 2024 in a parking lot in the 100 block of West River Drive. Terrones will be sentenced in August. A second man charged in the case, James Joslin Junior of Silvis, Illinois, pleaded guilty last August to lesser charges. He was later sentenced to a suspended prison term and placed on probation.
