(Ames, IA) — T.J. Otzelberger has added a new piece to his coaching staff, hiring Allan Hanson as an assistant coach for Iowa State Cyclones men’s basketball.
Hanson joins the program after spending the 2025–26 season at Bradley, where he helped guide the Braves to a 21-13 record, a runner-up finish in the Missouri Valley Conference, and a berth in the NIT. Bradley also put together a seven-game winning streak and placed third at the ESPN Events Invitational.
“Alan Hanson will be an incredible resource for our players,” Otzelberger said. “He’s a competitor and a proven winner who takes pride in helping student-athletes reach their full potential. We’re excited for the impact he’ll have, especially with our defensive system and point guards.”
Before Bradley, Hanson spent two seasons at Southern Utah, helping develop multiple All-WAC performers. He previously worked at Western Illinois during the 2022–23 season, contributing to the program’s first winning campaign in over a decade. Both stops came under head coach Rob Jeter.
Hanson also brings head coaching experience from Nicolet High School in Wisconsin, where he compiled a 117-39 record from 2016 to 2022. He led the Knights to a Division 2 state championship in 2019, finishing 27-1 and earning a No. 7 national ranking from USA Today.
A former player at Milwaukee, Hanson appeared in 114 career games from 2004–08. He was part of teams that won back-to-back Horizon League titles and made NCAA Tournament runs, including a Sweet 16 appearance in 2005.
“I’m extremely excited to join Coach Otzelberger’s staff,” Hanson said. “I look forward to building on the success this program has had both on and off the court.”
Hanson arrives as Iowa State continues its recent surge. The Cyclones went 29-8 this past season, tying for the second-most wins in program history. They finished No. 8 in the AP Top 25, extending their ranking streak to 52 consecutive weeks, and advanced to the Sweet 16 for the eighth time in school history.
