(Iowa City, IA) — Iowa Men’s Basketball Head Coach Ben McCollum has entertained a lot of visits from potential players over the last week and one has finally committed to coming to Iowa City. Ty’Reek Coleman, a transfer from Illinois St., will be playing for the Hawkeyes next season.
Coleman is a 6’2″ guard from Aurora, IL who played one season with the Redbirds last season. He played in every game and had 19 starts, averaging 10.0 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game. Coleman had excellent numbers from three point land going 37 of 89 for 41.6 percent. He has three seasons of eligibility remaining.
Coleman was largely recruited by mid majors with the concern that he did not have the body frame to deal with the physicality of the Big Ten and other major conferences. However, Iowa Head Coach Ben McCollum has a history of taking players from the smaller levels and having success with them. When Illinois St. played bigger schools like USC, Wake Forest, Auburn, Utah St. and Dayton, he did average 7.8 points a game as a freshman.
Coleman is the first addition for Iowa during the transfer portal period.
