(Iowa City, IA) – With the impressive season that Caitlin Clark has had this year, The Athletic has unanimously named her the National Player of the Year for the second straight season. Clark has been a finalist for just about every national award as this one marks the first of likely many to come for the senior guard.
The West Des Moines native leads the nation with 32.3 points and 8.6 assists per game this season, the first ever to finish at the top in both categories. Clark has six triple-doubles this season, marking 17 in her career which ranks second in NCAA history. She also just recently became the all-time leading scorer in college basketball. She currently is the only player in the country with 900+ points, 250+ assists, and 175+ rebounds this season.
Clark has multiple other honors this season including 11 Big Ten Player of the Week honors, eight NBCA National Player of the Week honors, and three AP National Player of the Week mentions. She is the first player in women’s or men’s basketball to record 3,600+ points, 1,000+ assists, and 850+ rebounds in her career. The National Player of the Year was also just named the Big Ten Player of the Year yesterday for the third consecutive season and was named First Team All-Big Ten.
Iowa and Clark will take on either Wisconsin or Penn State this Friday, March 8th in the Big Ten Conference Tournament quarterfinal at 5:30 p.m.
