(Oakland, IA) – The Vikings win the Battle of 59 as they beat Riverside 41-7. AHSTW started off scoring just in the first two minutes of the game and did not stop there. Riverside started off the game with a Grady Jeppesen misthrow to Viking Luke Sternberg as he intercepted the pass that led to a touchdown for AHSTW, not even a whole two minutes into the contest to make it 7-0. The Bulldogs made another error on their special teams with the kick return right after the interception. Riverside bobbled a kick return that was recovered by the Vikings as they jumped on top of the ball to put them in the redzone. On the first play, Luke Sternberg shined once again as he ran into the endzone for another touchdown to put the Vikings up 13-0 after the missed extra point. AHSTW added on another touchdown in the first quarter with a long pass from Camden Soukup into the hands of Kaden Baxter as he earned the third touchdown in the game for AHSTW to put them on top 20-0 to end the first quarter.
The Vikings shut out the Bulldogs in the second quarter as well. It all started with another play by Sternberg as he rushed all the way down the far sideline of the field for a 65-yard touchdown to make it an almost unreachable game at 27-0. Riverside was not able to get anything rolling offensively as the Vikings’ offense once again returned to the field. They led a drive down to the 13-yard line where Soukup threw a high-arching pass to the endzone for a touchdown as Gavin Newcomb made a high-jumping grab for the touchdown. After scoring on the two-point conversion, the Vikings were now up 35-0 to end the first half of action.
While the first half was all about scoring, the second half was all about the running clock. On fourth and seventeen, AHSTW went for it all. On a long throw by Soukup, Camden Baxter followed with an open lane for the 32-yard touchdown to put the Vikings up 41-0. All hope was not lost yet for Riverside, as they were able to land a successful drive of their own. With under three minutes left in the game, the Bulldogs ran a pitch to the quarterback Brady Jeppesen as he ran all the way for a touchdown after dipping and diving past a few Vikings. After a successful extra point, Riverside was still down 41-7 with under three minutes to play. AHSTW went on to win over Riverside 41-7.
AHSTW had a total of six touchdowns in the ballgame. Luke Sternberg led the team in touchdowns with three with two on the ground and one on a pick-six for a touchdown. Kayden Baxter led on the receiving end with two touchdowns and had just three receptions for 91 yards. Gavin Newcomb’s only reception of the game was a 13-yard touchdown pass that helped to put more of a lead down for the Vikings.
Riverside had just one touchdown in the game but had some players make an impact on the night. Grady Jeppesen threw 13-20 for 122 yards and rushed for 37 yards as he rushed for a 20-yard touchdown. Jaxon Gordon had 87 rushing yards on 23 carries. Davis Bramman led the team in receiving yards with 45 on the night. It was great to see everybody look past the Battle of 59 and wear purple at the game to support the Bramman family in Davis’s father’s battle with cancer.
AHSTW will take on Kuemper Catholic next week while Riverside will travel to take on South Central Calhoun in week three. You can check out the entire video coverage of the game right here.
