(Des Moines) The National Weather Service says there is a slight risk (level 2 out of 5) for severe storms over much of Iowa today.
Forecasters say scattered showers and thunderstorms will begin in the morning and continue into the early afternoon, with the highest severe weather chances in the mid-afternoon to evening as a line of storms moves through.
Damaging winds will be the primary threat. A few tornadoes and large hail will also be possible, mainly early in the event, with the threat diminishing as storms move eastward. Locally heavy rainfall and ponding may also occur.
The storms are expected to move northeasterly at around 35 miles per hour. The primary threat for severe weather is from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
