(Atlantic) The Atlantic City Council on Wednesday set August 2 for a Public Hearing to consider dissolving the Parks and Recreation Board. Atlantic Mayor Grace Garrett says this is the only elected Board out of nine committees within the city. She said in the beginning, the process and responsibilities of the Board were utterly different than they are today, now serving in an advisory role.
City Councilperson Linda Hartkoph spoke out against the Public Hearing, stating she has heard from too many of her constituents wanting to keep the Park Board.
City Councilman Pat McCurdy says he favors dissolving the Parks and Rec. Board. However, he would like an appointed group to serve in an advisory role.
City Councilman H. Lee Sisco heard from constituents who favored the park board and hiring a new director. He says the other concern would be the workload placed on Public Works Director Kirk Knudsen.
Atlantic City Clerk Barb Barrick stated there will still be an election, and three seats are open.
Barrick says interested individuals can take out papers anytime. The first filing date is August 21, and the filing deadline is August 28.
